How to Germinate a Bird of Paradise

    • 1). Select one seed to plant. Seeds are pea-sized and have orange fuzz on one end. The seed coating is hard and must be soaked and nicked (scarified) to germinate. Soak the seed in warm water for 12 hours. Remove the seed from the water and use a toenail clipper to nick the seed coating so the coating has an opening to the seed inside.

    • 2). Mix one part perlite and one part peat moss together. Place the mixture in a 2- to 3-inch diameter container with drainage holes. Water the mix thoroughly. Place the seed 1/2-inch down in the medium.

    • 3). Place the container in a plastic bag. Close the bag. Place the container in a location where it will have indirect sunlight and temperatures of about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the medium moist throughout the germinating cycle, which will take two to three months.
