How to Decorate Birthday Cupcakes
Decorate Fun Cupcakes
- 1). Choose the decorations. Cupcake decorations can be as simple or as complex as you want them, so plan ahead. Do you want a simple layer of frosting, or would you like big "B"'s scrolled on each in icing? Maybe you'd like to make a cupcake sundae and top them with whipped cream and a cherry, or draw a flower or star across each? Whatever you want to do, plan out how many you'll need and assemble the ingredients (various colors and flavors of frosting and icings, or make your own homemade frosting) before you begin.
- 2). Apply a top layer of frosting. Wait until the cupcakes are completely cool, then remove them from the baking pan. Choose the frosting that you would like to use as the base, and keep in mind that you will want to use a different color or flavor to write letters or make a design. Use a frosting knife to apply a layer of frosting over the top of the cupcake. Coat the top completely before transferring cupcakes to the refrigerator to set the frosting. After about 10 minutes, take the cupcakes out. To make the cupcakes neat, wipe away any excess frosting from the sides.
- 3). Make a statement. Now that your cupcakes have a base coat of frosting, get creative with designs. Fill a decorator bag with the icing of your choice and carefully write a fun-looking letter on each cupcake, or swirl the icing around the top for a circular, cone-like design. If you're really artistic, try something different, like creating a bright yellow sunflower with icing.
- 4). Add toppings. Cupcakes, like ice cream, are even better with a few fun toppings. Place a couple of bright candies in the icing for an extra affect, or sprinkle crushed Oreo cookies or Butterfinger bars on top of the icing for a surge of sweet taste. Just be sure to leave enough room for the candles.
