Sacsayhuaman Panoramic View

The approach to Sacsayhuaman from Cuzco gives us an idea of the scope of the huge fortress. As big as the ruins are, they are less than one-fifth of the original fortifications.
This was the site of a battle between the invading Spanish forces and the Incas. Manco Inca fought the invaders, but lost. After his defeat, in which most of his forces were killed, he retreated to Vilcabamba.

Legend has it that flocks of condors descended on the dead left on the grounds of the fortress.

The Inca loss is commemorated by eight condors on Cuszco's coat of arms.
