    Michigan State University

    • Located in East Lansing, Michigan State University is a public college. With over 36,000 students, the school has the largest undergraduate enrollment of any Michigan university. Nearly 90 percent of students at the school are Michigan residents, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The university's Department of Theater grants a bachelor's degree in design with a concentration in lighting. Students in the program study acting, play analysis, history of theater, stagecraft, drafting and audio and video technology. The program requires participation in the six to nine theater productions the university produces per year. Michigan State also offers a master's degree in the field of lighting design.

    Carnegie Mellon University

    • Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon is a private university with fewer than 6,000 undergraduate students. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked the school twenty-second among all colleges and universities in the United States. Admission to the school is highly competitive; fewer than 38 percent of freshmen who apply receive admission, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The school's College of Theater is notable; its graduates include celebrities like Blair Underwood, Ted Danson and Holly Hunter. The university reports that 100 percent of graduates from its bachelor's of design program find work in their field and design for Broadway shows and large theaters in Chicago, San Francisco and other parts of the country. Lighting design students participate in all of the university's productions and have the opportunity to complete an internship during their junior or senior year.

    California Institute of the Arts

    • With fewer than 900 undergraduate students, California Institute of the Arts is a small, private institution located in Valencia, a suburban community 60 miles east of Los Angeles. Established in 1961, the university grants a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in lighting design. Several graduates from the program have gone on to achieve success in the field; lighting design alumni include Tony Award winners and recipients of the Drama Critics Circle Lifetime Achievement Award. During their studies, students in the program develop lighting not only for theater productions, but also for dance presentations and films. The school has five theaters that host shows continuously throughout the year, giving students ample opportunity to hone their craft. The university also grants a Masters of Fine Arts in lighting design.
