Types of Three-Step Acne Medications

    Why Three Steps?

    • There isn't any one set reason why the three-step acne medications are so effective. However, it is believed that the combination of treatments allows for a more thorough cleansing of the skin without causing side effects or injury. They provide cleansing, exfoliation and hydration, whereas single-step acne treatments usually only provide cleansing. This means dirt and oil is removed, but the acne is not treated.

    What Are the Benefits?

    • Three-step acne medications offer a more complete acne treatment system. They bring balance back to your skin, where many other products will just strip it of oil, and cause peeling, flaking or increased oil production. They also are generally cheaper than prescription medications and offer a more sustainable mode of treatment. For instance, prescription medications may only be used for a given length of time, whereas over-the-counter three-step treatments can be used indefinitely.

    • Proactiv is the most popular three-step acne medication available on the market. It has numerous celebrity endorsements and is relatively affordable. It contains benzoyl peroxide, witch hazel and moisturizing ingredients to keep the skin from peeling. The system includes a renewing cleanser, a revitalizing toner and a repairing lotion, which work to cleanse, exfoliate and treat your acne while moisturizing your skin.

    • Another popular product is DermaCleanse. This system includes a cleanser, an acne gel and an herbal supplement. This system takes a slightly different approach since it targets both current acne and helps your body heal itself from within. It may not be for everyone, however, so consult with your doctor before starting this treatment plan.

    • Clearpores is another three-step program that helps to clear stubborn acne. It includes a cleanser that penetrates deeply into the pores, a supplement to help your body battle acne from the inside out and a cream to help heal current acne and keep the skin clear and smooth. As with any treatment, especially those that include an oral supplement, consult with your doctor first before beginning this regimen.
