How to Share an External Hard Drive

    Sharing an External Hard Drive on Your Computer With Other Users

      Double-click on "My Computer." Right-click on the drive you wish to share and click "Properties."

      Click the "Sharing" tab.

      Click on the sentence "If you understand the risk but still want to share the root of the drive, click here."

      Under "Local sharing and security," click the phrase "Shared Documents." Your shared documents folder will open.

      Drag the drive from My Computer to your shared documents folder and close both windows.

    Sharing an External Hard Drive on Your Local Network

    • 1). Perform steps 1 through 3 in Section 1.

      Under "Network sharing and security," select "Share this folder on the network." Beside "Share name:," enter a name for the drive. If you want other users to be able to change your files, select the "Allow network users to change my files" option.

    • 3). Click "OK."

      If you have given the drive a name longer than 12 characters, you will get a warning message. Click "Yes" to keep the long name (unless you have a computer on your network with an operating system older than Windows 2000). If you have a computer on your network with an operating system older than Windows 2000, click "No" and rename the drive to be less than 12 characters.

    • 5). Close both windows.
