How to Cut a Tapered Tongue-and-Groove

    • 1). Loosen the bit chuck on the table router, using a box wrench. The chuck is at the base of the protruding bit.

    • 2). Pull out the standard bit and insert the tapered tongue-and-groove bit into the chuck. Tighten the chuck's bolt with the box wrench.

    • 3). Slide the table router's fence toward the bit. Measure from the face of the fence to the outside edge of the bit to set the depth of the tongue-and-groove. The fence will serve as the guide along which your wood piece will run as the bit cuts into its end.

    • 4). Power on the router and allow the bit to reach peak rpm, or revolutions per minute. Slide the wood piece along the fence until it encounters the bit. Continue pushing the piece through the bit until the entire tongue-and-groove has been cut.

    • 5). Complete a second cut on the piece of wood that will be joined to the first piece. Power down the router table. Move to the process of joining the tongue-and-groove pieces together in the installation process.
