How to Prune a Stark Peach Tree

    • 1). Prune the peach trees in late winter or early spring, before they bud.

    • 2). Remove all the dead, damaged or diseased wood at the branch collar, the area of the branch that bulges where it meets the tree. Use loppers.

    • 3). Cut off the upright branches in the middle of the tree at the branch collar with loppers. These shade the trees interior to keep it from fruiting as well.

    • 4). Cut off any shoots smaller than a pencil with pruners since they don't produce fruit well. Also cut off any low-hanging branches or branches that hang vertically at the branch collar with loppers.

    • 5). Cut off one-third of every fruiting branch that is longer than 24 inches. Use the pruners or loppers.
