How to Estimate Patterned Carpet

    • 1). Measure the length and width of the room to determine the amount of running feet of carpet you will need. Keep in mind that standard carpet width is 12 feet.

    • 2). Draw a diagram of the room, noting any seams needed. For example, if your room is 20 feet by 25 feet, you will need two of carpet running in the same direction. The seam can be along the room's length or width, depending on which direction you want the pattern to appear. You will need two pieces of carpet the length of the seam.

    • 3). Check the repeat pattern of the carpet you have selected. This will be displayed in inches on the information panel on the back of the carpet sample. Round this number up to the nearest foot, and add it to the length of one piece of your carpet cuts.

    • 4). Add the two lengths of carpet needed, plus 10 percent allowance for cutting waste. This is the total number of running feet of patterned carpet needed for the installation.
