How to Smock Clothes

    • 1). Lay your fabric out on a flat surface, such as a table or counter. Create a pleat in the fabric by pinching a small section in between your thumb and forefinger. Secure with a straight pin in the bottom of the pleat. Insert your thumb in the area right next to your pleat, and use your forefinger to carefully grasp and pull the fabric next to it, creating a second pleat. Pin the second pleat in the same manner as the first. Continue until you have pleated the entire section you wish to smock.

    • 2). Thread a needle, and knot the end. Insert your needle perpendicularly into the top of the pleating. Push the needle through the pleat. Continue pushing the needle into the next pleat, keep the second stitch in line with the first. Repeat until your needle has passed through the top of all of the pleats. Once you reach the end, gently pull the needle to gather the pleats. Hold onto the cloth so the gathers are secure, and tie off the thread by sewing a few stitches into the fabric at the end of the row. Cut off the excess thread and needle. Your smocking will remain in place.

    • 3). Re-thread your needle, knotting the end as before. Insert the needle at the bottom of the pleats, about 1/8 inch lower than your first row of stitches. Push the needle through the pleats as before, gathering the pleats and knotting the thread at the end to the fabric. Continue this pattern until you have created at least 10 rows of smocking.
