New Things You Should Try at the State Fair of Texas

There's so much deep-fried food at the State Fair of Texas that you may not know where to begin. Food is not cheap either. It's always a good idea to share items. Well, there are a few exceptions. There are a few foods that I will not share.

Here are some must-try foods at the 2014 State Fair of Texas. I taste tested them myself. Don't miss this annual festival and event -- it runs through October 19th.

1. Deep Fried Bluebonnet

Official Description: The Deep Fried Texas Bluebonnet is a blueberry muffin, scone-style batter that is stuffed with cream cheese, blueberries and sweet morsels of white chocolate. It is baked and deep fried to a perfect golden brown. This mountain of flavor is topped off with whipped cream, chopped white chocolate morsels, powdered sugar, blueberries, and a delicious blueberry glaze.

My description: Isaac Roussou should have won again this year because it was crazy good. If you like blueberries, you will love this dish. Seriously. Little bits of white chocolate and I am not a fan of white chocolate. It really works here. Do not share this dish. Yeah, it's that good.

2. Funnel Cake Ale

One of the 2014 Big Tex Choice Award winners was NOT deep fried. Can you believe it?! What a refreshing change. And speaking of refreshing, this light ale is delicious. The plastic cup is even dusted with a ring of powdered sugar -- giving it that authentic taste of funnel cake. I recommend you try one if you are over the age of 21.

3. Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil

The judges said this was the best-tasting food item during the 2014 Big Tex Choice Awards. I have to agree because it was a deep-fried ball of yum!

Was it worth the hype? Yes. Everything you would expect in a shrimp boil rolled into a ball, dusted with Fish Fry, and fried to a golden brown! Baby gulf shrimp, diced red potatoes, onion, lemon, and seasoning are formed around a cocktail shrimp, dusted and fried with the tail sticking out for a handle. It's served with a remoulade sauce that is literally one of the best I've ever tasted.

4. "Hog Wild" Ice Cream Sandwich

Cinnamon caramel honey-bacon ice cream in a maple-flavored waffle. Any bacon-lover has to try this flavorful dessert. The cost is 6 coupons and it's a nice treat you might want to try this year.

5. Fernie's Skyway Porch

Yes, the place is named after the Fernie of Funnel Cake fame. Fernie's Skyway Porch sits underneath the turnaround of the Texas Skyway. It's the perfect place to enjoy a cold adult beverage and a snack. In addition to beer, they serve Kik's Crafted Cocktails on Tap. These wine-infused adult beverages are tasty and refreshing. I suggest the Texas Tea. It's sweet but not too sweet.

Specialty cocktails are 10 coupons. Try the Electric Lemonade, Melontini or Mint Mojito.
