How to Find Out Where Your Property Lines Are for Your House

    • 1). Review the title paperwork you received when closing on your home. Within that paperwork, you should find a detailed description of the property that includes the property footage. You may even have a sketch from the surveyor who mapped out the property lines before closing that shows the exact location of the property lines.

    • 2). Request a copy of your property's plat map from your county records department. You may need to pay a processing fee to obtain the document.

    • 3). Scan the edges of the property where you suspect the boundaries may lie with a metal detector. Metal survey posts were used in the past when mapping out property edges, and they usually lie between four and five feet below the ground. You can easily pick up the markers with a metal detector. Tape them off so you can easily locate them if a dispute arises.
