Instrctions on Making a Curtain Out of Paper Beads
Making The Beads
- Before you learn to make the curtain, you must make the beads. You will need a pen, scissors, ruler, a needle or toothpick, a thread that matches the width of your needle or toothpick, such as fishing line, nail varnish and paper. The paper is the most important piece to collect, since this is your decorative material. You can use paper from magazines for an eclectic look or if your room has a certain color scheme, you can choose construction paper with a solid color. Keep in mind, the thicker the paper, the thicker your beads will be.
Take your pen and paper, measure 2cm from the corner at the top of the page and mark it (C). Then measure 1cm (B) from the corner on the same side at the bottom of the page and mark it. Using your ruler, draw a line from the top corner, down to B and up to C. This creates a long isosceles triangle. Continue drawing triangles across the page in this fashion. Cut the triangles and throw out the first 1cm scrap from the side you started with. Using your needle or toothpick, tightly roll your paper strips. Roll first at the thick end and finishing with the small point. Glue both ends of the triangle to ensure a tight hold. Lightly varnish the bead with nail polish to help seal the hold. The beads will need to be fully varnished again once they are strung.
For rectangular beads, simply cut rectangular patterns and roll. For a thicker or smaller bead, add or decrease the (C) measurements by 1 or 2cm. (B) must always be measured half of (C).
Making the Curtains
- To make the curtain, you will need the fishing line you threaded your beads on, a curtain rod, rod brackets, eyehooks and a ruler and pencil. Measure the width of your window or the space you would like to hang the curtain before you buy the rod to ensure the right fit.
Determine how far apart you would like your bead lines to be. Measure and mark these places on your curtain rod for your eye hooks. Screw in or attach the eyehooks as you need. Then measure out how long your fishing line needs to be for the beads. Measure from the eyehook to the desired distance from the floor and give 2 extra inches for tying. A standard length for curtains is 75 inches. Tie knots into the bottoms of each thread you have measured and cut. Thread your finished beads onto the line, making whatever design or look you want. Bead until you have 5 to 6 inches left on the line and tie a knot next to the top bead. Use the remaining length of line to tie onto the eyehooks. Finally, mount the curtain brackets above the window or space, measuring the width accordingly. Place your curtain rod on the brackets and enjoy your new handmade curtain. Don't forget to re-varnish the beads once they have been hung.
