Apple Type Crafts for Kids

    Caramel Apples

    • Caramel apples are a fun, easy, classic treat.Caramel Apple image by Katya Mikhlin from Fotolia.com

Caramel apples are an edible craft that kids can make to give as presents. Wash and dry the apples, and push a wooden stick into the center of each apple. Place chopped nuts in a large bowl. Heat up caramel in a pan on the stove or in the microwave.

Have children first dip their apples into the caramel and then roll them in the bowl of nuts. Place the apples on wax paper and allow them to dry. The caramel will become hard and less sticky. When the apples are dry, help the kids wrap their apples in plastic wrap and tie a pretty ribbon to secure the plastic.

    Apple Decorating

    • Let kids decorate real apples with other foods to create their apple alter egos. Have children cut pieces of yellow, brown, or red yarn to glue on top of their apples to resemble hair. Use toothpicks to attach cherry tomatoes for the nose and ears. Glue on plastic googly eyes and Cheerios or Froot Loops to make a mouth. Caution children that these apples are not edible since they have glue on them.

    Apple Face Collage

    • Ask children to bring in several pictures of their family members. Help the children cut out apple shapes from red and green construction paper. They can also cut out green leaves, if they wish. They can then glue their apples to cardstock or scrapbook paper. Help the children cut their family pictures to fit inside the apples. Glue each face on an apple. The kids can draw pictures or place stickers on empty spaces on their collages.
