How to Change Your Address Through the Post Office

    Online or By Phone

    • 1). To change your address online, go to the U.S. Postal Service change of address website at www.usps.com/moversguide. To change your address by telephone, call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777).

    • 2). When prompted, specify the following information: whether the move is permanent or temporary (if temporary, also indicate the start and stop dates for forwarding the mail); whether the move is for an individual, family, or business; your full name; your old address; your new address; and if using the online system, an email address.

    • 3). Enter your credit card or debit card information. The U.S. Postal Service will use this information to electronically verify that the address you provided matches the address on the credit or debit card. A verification fee of $1 will be charged for this service. If using the online system, an automatic email confirmation will be generated to you after the form is submitted.

    • 4). You will receive a Confirmation Notification Letter and a Welcome Kit at your new address seven to 10 business days after the effective date specified on the change of address request. You should review the change of address information provided on the letter to verify it is correct.

    By Mail or In Person

    • 1). To change your request by mail or in person, you have two options: use the online system to print out the Change of Address request form or pick up a Change of Address request form (PS Form 3575) from your local post office.

    • 2). Fill out the following required information on the form: whether the move is permanent or temporary (if temporary, also indicate the start and stop dates for forwarding the mail); whether the move is for an individual, family, or business; your full name; your old address; and your new address.

    • 3). If you are using the online system, print out the completed form. (The "Print Your Request" option is available at the bottom of the "Identity Verification" page once all other required fields have been completed.) Sign and date the completed form or a printout of the form.

    • 4). Mail the completed form to the U.S. Postal Service, take it to your local post office or hand it to your mail carrier.

    • 5). You will receive a Confirmation Notification Letter and a Welcome Kit at your new address in approximately seven to 10 business days after the effective date specified on the Change of Address form. You should review the change of address information provided on the letter to verify it is correct.
