Zheng Wantong, CPPCC Ninth National Committee Secretary-General

BEIJING, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Following is a biographical sketch of Zheng Wantong, who was elected general-secretary of the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Born May, 1941; native of Tianjin; joined Communist Party of China (CPC) August, 1960; started work in August, 1961.

After graduating from Chinese Language Department of Tianjin Teachers' College in 1961, Zheng taught at No.78 Middle School in Tianjin.

Was head of School Work Department of Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) Hebei District Committee in Tianjin from 1965 to 1968.

Worked as a cadre and later deputy head of Publicity Department of CPC Hebei District Committee of Tianjin from 1970 to 1978.

Worked as a cadre at General Office and Policy Study Office of CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee from 1978 to 1982. Was director of General Office from 1982 to 1983, secretary-general of Municipal Committee from 1983 to 1988.

From 1988 to 1993, was vice-chairman of Executive Committee of All-China Federation of Trade Unions.

From 1993 to the election this afternoon, was deputy head of United Front Work Department of CPC Central Committee, deputy secretary-general and Standing Committee member of CPPCC Eighth National Committee.

Has been member of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection since 15th National Congress of CPC convened in fall of 1997.
