Changzhou, facing the Yangtze River in north, is located in the center of China's developed Yangtze River Delta. It is 162 km to Shanghai in east and 103 km to Nanjing in west. Changzhou covers an area of 4375 sq. km with a population of 3,360,000. The Changzhou City covers an area of 260 sq. km and has a population of 800,000.
Changzhou enjoys a solid industrial foundation and a complete industrial system. It is one of the "China's Top 50 Cities" in comprehensive strength. Its GDP in 1996 reached RMB 43.2 billions.
Changzhou New District ( Changzhou Hi-tech Development Zone) is in the north of Changzhou city. It is bordered by the Yangtze River in north and the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway in south. Covering an area of 116 sq.km, the New District is functionally planned into three Zones. The National Hi-tech Development zone in the south covers an area of 32 sq.km. This is the key Zone in introducing foreign investment, promoting scientific progress and advancing industrial development in Changzhou. Up to now, there have been 300 foreign investment enterprises established by investors from U. S. A, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. The Xinlong Zone in the middle with an area of 45 sq.km is a comprehensive zone for sustainable development of the New District. The New Port Zone along the Yangtze River covers an area of 39 sq.km. It is a special zone for the development of port industry, energy industry,raw materials and heavy chemical industry.
