Directed by Zhang Yimou, the film won the Award of Golden Lion in Venice Film Festival. Though barely older than the students, a teenage girl is assigned as subsitute teacher in a village school. She is asked not to allow any student to drop out. When one of her students leaves school to make money for his debt-ridden family, the girl goes to search the city, trying to get him back.

Two Chinese immigrants keep meeting in Los Angeles. Every time, something unexpected happens: "America isn't what you think it is." This is about America as seen through a Chinese eyes. It is also a funny love story, and it was one of the big hits of 1998.
