Beijing Digs New Dajie

An east-west street planned across South Beijing will break ground this month.

Guang’an Jie, stretches eight kilometers from Guang’anmen at the West

Second Ring Road of Xuanwu District to Guangqumen at the East Third Ring Road of Chongwen District.

The street will be the second east-west thoroughfare next to Changan Avenue.

Eight thousand families and 300 companies along the way will be moved out, for which the government will invest “several billion yuan” for their resettlement, according to Beijing Evening News.

Tourism Festival Opens

Fangshan District kicks off its sixth Tourist Cultural Festival at Hancunhe, its richest modern village this year on Monday, May 1. Besides tourism activities and tour routes, this year will include a seminar in Chinese to talk about the future of the Chinese countryside.

54-2.jpg (13574 bytes)Hancunhe was developed by a 30-member construction team formed in 1978. Success accrued after the building of the Purple Jade Hotel in 1984.

In 1993, Hancunhe became the richest village in Beijing suburbs. The Hancunhe Construction Group ranked top for paying state tax last year.

During the festival, four new tour routes will open and two sculpture exhibitions of Chinese rich villages will be held. Visitors can pick vegetables in greenhouses and eat at local Hancunhe village homes.

Peacocks Fly to Hills

Two hundred peacocks have been flown in from Zhejiang to settle at Fragrant Hills Park.

Most of them have blue and white plumage, but there are other colors.

The peacocks wil settle in a peacock garden west of Yanjing Lake in Fragrant Hills. Peacocks spread their wings usually at about 9am and 3 pm.55-1.jpg (13449 bytes)

King Returns

China’s first and finest rock star Cui Jian will appear on stage after a long official silence at Worker’s Stadium on May 26.

Cui appears alongside Chinese singers from all over China including Taiwan and Hong Kong meeting to sing for “Meet Beijing 2000”.

Great Race

Beijing’s first international Great Wall climbing and long-distance race will take place on Thursday, May 4 at Mutianyu Great Wall. More than 10,000 people will take part in the race, according to Beijing Evening News.

The starting point will be six kilometers from the foot of the wall. Runners will climb 1,400 steps to the sixth watchtower, then run on the wall to the 11th. Then they run back own. The narrowest part of the wall is 3 meters wide.

Puppeters Perform Show

A science fiction puppet show, Joke of the Angels, has been invited to perform by the China Puppet Troupe, which stages a new show for children every year. Real actors will join the puppets on stage.

The play concerns environmental protection and is set in the future. Two angels, Happiness and Sadness, disguise themselves as travel guides and begin an adventure on three planets.

High-Tech Week

The third “China Beijing International Hi-tech Industries Week” opening Monday, May 8 is expected to be twice the size of last year’s, according to the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Beijing Sub-Council.

Governmental, corporate and professional organizations from more than 40 countries and regions are busy forming delegations.

Domestic and international economic and trade talks will be held during the week at the two-day “International Business Symposium on Technological Trade and Cooperation”, expected to attract 1,000 delegates.

High-tech week activities are available online. More than 8,000 hi-tech projects can be viewed in English and Chinese on the internet. The net will publicize the results of discussions and negotiations on projects and provide comprehensive statistical analyses of letters of intent.

Parks Springs Off

Chaoyang Park has prepared a festive program of events for all the family this month, featuring a kite festival, bungee jumping and hot air balloon rides.

Bungee
The highest bungee jump in Bejing will open for business on May 1 in Venture Garden, the small island on the south of the Chaoyang Park Lake.

The 75-meter plunge will soon compete with other entertainment under construction including a flying trapeze and rock climbing.

Kites
A kite exhibition will be held in Chaoyang Park until May 26. The birthplace of kites, Chinese kites come in three traditional styles * classical figures, marine animals and insects or birds. More than 100 types of kite on show include foreign kites, soft and hard wing kites and tube and series kites.

Two highlights of the daily show include a 70-meter-long centipede kite and a 40-meter-long ?wo Dragons Playing with a Pearl* kite made by kite master and Guinness World Record holder Jiang Quan.

The large kite performance can only be conducted when there is a force 4 wind or greater. Crafts people will also demonstrate the art of constructing kites and there will be displays of folk arts and crafts including walnut carving.

China's first tourist hot air balloon has been launched in Chaoyang Park. Visitors fly up to 100 meters, with the three-person basket attached to a rope of fixed height. Controlled rise and descent is achieved by the traditional heating method, and the balloon moves safely and at an even speed under professional operation.

Auction Raises Vital Funds

Foreign embassy officials and heads of the Xi?n Jassen Pharmaceutical Company * the world? biggest schizophrenia medicine manufacturer * attended and bought some of the thought-provoking and fascinating works.

Money raised will be invested in schizophrenia hospital equipment and medical facilities.

Schizophrenia has been on the increase since the 1980s. In Beijing, 340,000 people suffer from schizophrenia.

Nature Reserve Blossoms

Dayangshan Nature Reserve offers natural scenic views 45 kilometers north of Asian Games Village.

The park presents a new tour package this season. The package is limited to groups of at least five persons. For 10 yuan, tourists can eat a local people's lunch including two corn pancakes, two dishes and a green bean soup.

Visitors can climb the mountains, catch fish in the brook, learn how to cook peasant food and local villagers will teach visitors how to do fieldwork.

Local houses are also available for overnight stay (60 yuan a person for three meals, one night).

Driving: From Andingmen, Litang Lu, passing Xiaotangshan Xingshou Daqiao (bridge), driving north for another 8 kilometers.
