Violin Concert
Kyung-Wha Chung

In a career that has already spanned more than twenty-five years, Kyung-Wha Chung has earned recognition as a performing artist. In 1972, the South Korean government awarded her the medal of Civil Merit.

She has been cited by the Sunday Times of London as one of the most important contributors to the British cultural scene.

During the past two decades, she has appeared in recital and with virtually all of the major orchestras and conductors throughout North America, Europe and the Far East. Her most recent recordings on EMI Classics consist of Brahms* violin sonatas, performances in which she is accompanied by the pianist Peter Frankl.

Russian Feast

The Mariinnsky Theatre Kirov Opera and Kirov Orchestra will come to Beijing under the baton of maestro Valery Gergiev from April 18 to 23, bringing their repertory Queen of Spades and Aida to Beijingers.

Born in Moscow, Valery Gergiev studied conducting with Ilya Musin at the Leningrad Conservatory.

At 23, he won the Herbert von Karajan Conductors Competition in Berlin.

He made his Kirov Opera debut in 1978 with War and Peace, and was appointed artistic director and principal conductor of Mariinsky Theatre Kirov Opera in 1988.

Carmen's Coming

Carmen will be staged by the China Central Opera Theatre in the 21st Century Theatre. Liu Shan will play Carmen. Huang Xuefeng will be Don Jose. Huang has also appeared in Madame Butterfly as Pinkerton, in Pagliacci as Canio and in La Traviata as Alfredo. p36_1.jpg (15249 bytes)

Danish Dancers to Visit
