School Grows

Beijing BISS International School is a multi-cultural, co-educational, day school enrolling students from pre-school to grade 12. Set up in 1994 to serve the Beijing expatriate community's need for international education, BISS's growth has mirrored the rapid development of Beijing in the past few years.

Colonel Sells Art

The first foreign fastfood restaurant in China has decided to spread its wings: Kentucky Fried Chicken Qianmen now differs widely from before, according to the press release.

KFC Qianmen restaurant, opened in 1987, is changing its interior decoration into traditional Chinese architecture style and exhibiting artworks on the third floor. It is the first time a KFC restaurant has so radically diverted from its corporate identity.

Hair Show

A Millennium Hair Show launched the "VS Sassoon" product range and celebrated the company's first anniversary in China in Beijing recently.

French Fry

French professional skincare products maker Sothys will hold a "Dragon Nights" party at the Great Wall Sheraton Hotel on Thursday, August 5, as its 1999 highlight party.

On that night, a small auction will be run by China Guardian.

Every Saturday night 6 pm until midnight the hotel stages its international fun food extravaganza.

Eleven pieces will be auctioned at the Thursday night bash including black pearl, sapphire, Chinese jade ware and paintings.

New Money

China is to have a new red 100-yuan note after October 1, when a fifth set of Renminbi will be issued throughout the country.

The paper currency, 155mm long and 77mm wide, features a portrait of Mao Zedong, a plum blossom on the left and the national emblem of China on the upper left.

The Great Hall of People is the main picture of the reverse side.

The words "The People's Bank of China" are printed in Chinese Pinyin and in four nationalities' characters --Mongolian, Tibetan, Uygur and Zhuang --separately.

The fifth set of Renminbi also includes 50 yuan, 20 yuan, 10 yuan, 5 yuan, 1 yuan, 5 jiao and 1 jiao.

Flea Market Opens

The biggest flea market in north Beijing, Ganluyuan goods exchange market, has opened for business.

Under the roof of the 17,000-square-meter market are 2,400-square-meter colorful sheds of steel roof beam.

The monthly rent is 60 yuan per stall and the day rent is 3 yuan per stall.

People may enjoy the trust service of the market if they are unwilling to make transactions themselves.

Shop fronts for porcelain, works of arts and furniture, and a close hall for antiques, jade wares and calligraphy and paintings are also available in the market.

Tibetans Scale Mount Lingshan

The Tibet local conditions and customs festival will be held at "Beijing's Mount Qomolangma (Mount Everest)"--Lingshan (Ling Mountain) --according to Shenghuo Shibao (Life Times).

Ling mountain's average temperature is 11 centigrade degrees lower than in urban areas.

Tourists also can drink Lhasa beer, let off fireworks and enjoy songs and dances of people dressed as Tibetans.

Lotus Leaves in Lake

More than 200 acres of lotus are in full bloom in Cuihu Lake, with 10 species of stretching around it.
