This exhibition focuses on the windows, screens and inner
layout of traditional Chinese houses. Traditional Chinese buildings are mainly composed of
wood beams and columns.
Doors with carvings and screens are used to link the
columns. The screens, with beautiful carvings, usually have six or eight leaves. As
buildings in the past were always very tall, and so the screens appear very tall and
narrow, like a pretty slim girl. Ancient people called the upper screen board "waist
board" and the lower part as "skirt board." The carvings of the two parts
are also quite different. The center of the screens is usually carved into two shapes:
diamond and square. The "waist board" and "skirt board" are decorated
with relief sculptures of legendary figures, landscapes, birds, animals and flowers. There is also a close connection between classical Chinese
furniture and architecture. On one hand, the size of the building is based on the size of
the furniture. On the other hand, the shapes, structure and colors are influenced by the
building. The exhibits are the private collection of Ma Weidu, who
opened China's first private museum, Guan Fu Ya Ji at Liulichang. The museum exhibits his
collection of classical Chinese art pieces, including a quarter of his collection of the
doors, screens and windows.
