June 2000 Issue

cover.jpg (23225 bytes)Right now, practically everyone in Beijing is perspiring.

Whether you savor the rays or regard air-conditioning as a gift from God, this issue serves up a few interesting tidbits to distract your attention from the heat.

Perhaps most interesting is an interview with top Chinese director Zhang Yimou, who has agreed to film a Beijing Olympic promo. He does not hesitate in saying he thinks the Olympics could be just the breath of fresh air this dusty old city needs.

Just in case you had forgotten, Children? Day is June 1. That prompted us to interview Chinese and Western kids about what? on their mind. This seemed chiefly to be the choice of toys at certain famous fastfood retail outlets, bless 'em. Nonetheless, they did share some fairly entertaining insights.

All that, plus our weekend getaway to Changping County and the ever-colorful dining guide ought to be a breeze to read at this sticky time of year.

So, as Confucius ought to have said:

Keep cool.

Editor, Zhang Ming
