When I travelled to China in 1972,
many naive commentators viewed the initiative in purely
strategic terms. In fact, the driving idea behind the
initiative was that it was counterproductive, to the
causes of both peace and prosperity, for the United
States to Be cut off From a billion of the ablest people
in the world. That was the reason for my trip to
China, and fourteen years later it remains at the heart
of Sino-U.S. relations. The people of China and the
United States have much to offer one another. The
substantial trade between our two nations today is only a
small fraction of what it will be in years to come.I understand this Directory is to
contain listings of those companies who invest in , or
who are prepared to invest in, china, and thus in the
future of Sino-U.S. relations. I am happy to have this
opportunity to salute both these farsighted businessmen
and their Chinese partners and partners-to-be.
