The author, Brian Johnston , 10/30/97
A witty and sympathetic insight into contemporary China I spent almost three years
working and travelling in China and this is my response to a challenging, fascinating and
insightful experience. I wanted to convey the mystery and wonder of a strange culture, but
at the same time avoid the stereotypes of the "inscrutable" Chinese that dog so
many accounts of the country. I also wanted to look behind the facade of the communist
government, so focused on by the Western media, and see the "real" Chinese, the
ordinary people striving to be individuals and to lead their lives as best they can within
the parameters that restrain them. The book is a mixture of history, social commentary and
a look at contemporary China, to which is added humourous episodes, personal encounters
and the adventurers of being a foreign traveller in a strange land. From having to chase,
kill and eat a snake, to starring in a Chinese television commerical and meeting China's
most famous rock star... What can I say - this is a great read! It's also one of the very
few travel books that take a look at China after the Tiananmen crackdown, in a country of
fast economic and social change. It also gives a unique insight into Chinese minority
cultures and their position in a Han Chinese-dominated society. Please consider!

Reviews
The publisher, Institute of East Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley; easia@uclink.berkeley.edu , 04/06/98 DEAR ALICE--description of contents DEAR ALICE, recently nominated for the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize, is a collection of lively letters from China written by U.S. Americans hired to teach English there. The adventurous teachers write home to Alice Renouf, the woman who got them their job, trying to capture the high hilarity and deep insights that come with adapting to a land one writer calls "on the opposite side of everything you can think of."
See Amanda dragged from quick mud with a thick tropical vine!
Be there as Jeanne survives visits from 175 students in a Chinese hospital!
The artless, first-person style of letters from all over China captures the feel of learning to live in a strange land better than even great scholarship can. No description of "the Chinese" could match Teddy's portrait of a friend, which begins, "An overworked computer science student, she has the vibrancy of a handful of colored ribbons rippling in the wind." Greg's third-month report conveys more about pollution than the most authoritative UN figures: "The sun has broken through today, finally, and hatched that low egg of gray clouds." And no wise advice from travel books about buying train tickets in advance is as memorable as Kristin's story of rip-offs, missed trains, then finally a ticket but "NO SEAT! I stand, squat, lean, cry for 17 HRS! Water is dripping on my head, I'm surrounded by a FLOOD of FILTHY SLUDGE! No place to sit--so crowded--ALMOST DIED. Finally get ot Hangzhou and it is GORGEOUS, and so is the reason I went there--Phillipe!"
It's all here: passion and confusion, despair, and deep love--"a grand drama," as editor Phyllis Thompson calls it, "played out by foreigners all over the Chinese republic."
Readers will laugh, muse, and learn along with these intrepid explorers and, in the end, will understand better why David writes home, "I think this year has done more for me than twelve years in corporate America would do." "Because I have chosen to touch the fire of Chinese life," adds Greg, "I have actually felt a greater range of human emotions. I won't leave China a jaded and cynical man; China will hold me in its grasp, possibly forever."

Into Thin Air is a riveting first-hand account of a catastrophic expedition up Mount
Everest. In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon
Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise
of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead. Krakauer's
book is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors
leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, Into Thin
Air clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain
progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other
Everest trips throughout history. The author's own anguish over what happened on the
mountain is palpable as he leads readers to ponder timeless questions.

When David Breashears agreed to climb Mount Everest with an IMAX camera in order to film
from the summit, he had no idea that his little expedition would become embroiled in a
tragedy that would make headlines around the world. On May 10, 1996, two expeditions led
by experienced Everest guides Rob Hall and Scott Fisher summited the mountain, only to
suffer the loss of eight members--including the two leaders--on the way back down. At the
time, Breashears and his
filmmaking crew were at the base camp preparing for their own climb--originally planned
for that same day but postponed after realizing there would already be several other
groups on the summit. Instead of making a film, Breashears and company participated in the
rescue and only later reached the summit of Everest to successfully complete their film.
Broughton Coburn, a long-time resident of Nepal and a friend of David Breashears, was commissioned to write a book about the filmmaking expedition, the tragedy on Everest, and the mountain itself. He has more than succeeded with Everest: Mountain Without Mercy, a taut recounting of disaster and triumph at 29,000 feet. But this book is about more than just mountain climbing; Coburn has also included fascinating information about Nepal, Buddhism, and the Sherpa culture, as well as the history of climbing Everest. He covers everything from the causes of altitude sickness to Nepal's increasing problems with deforestation, and through it all he weaves the story of that day in May when Everest again proved unpredictable--and deadly. For a white-knuckle climb to the top of the world's highest mountain, complete with stunning photographs, you can't do better than Everest: Mountain Without Mercy.

A reader from New York, NY, 07/04/98
Everything you ever needed in a travel book This book is a must-have, must-buy if
you are planning a trip to China. If you don't speak Chinese, the book is terrific. It
contains all of the commonly used phrases for every situation that you could possibly
encounter in China. In addition, it has extraordinarily detailed directions on how to
travel within the country. Almost every tourist you will meet has a Lonely Planet in hand.
It is true that there are no equivalents of this book within China and the people that I have met there think that the book is very thorough. In general, most people in China do not get to travel a great deal so there are not a lot of travel books in China. I would recommend all Lonely Planet books for travel throughout Asia.

Travel Editor's Recommended Book
Travel guides are swell wherever, with museum tips here and restaurant recommendations
there, but a great guidebook is essential in China. Independent Western travelers hang on
their travel guide's every word for survival, and Rough Guide delivers, describing hotel,
restaurant, and transportation details accurately and clearly. It also provides scads of
information on culture, history, sights, dangers, pleasures, politics, health, weather,
clothing, money, and customary niceties. The maps are excellent, and important phrases
(hotels, destinations) are written in Chinese characters. And as a backpacker bonus, the
book weighs a mere 1.3 pounds despite the thoroughness of its content.

Excellent travel guide to the Lost Cities of the East As an ardent armchair traveller with
a real interest in lost histories, for me this book combined two great loves. David writes
well and really makes you feel that you are travelling with him through India and China
and on the roof of the world. His observations are to the point and his knowledge of early
history impressive. Recommended.
