Reviews From the Publisher
This vital book introduces readers to Chinese culture, beliefs, and legends in today's
context. It will help to narrow the cultural and philosophical gap between Chinese and
Westerners. "D is for Doufu" explores the meanings of 23 Chinese words and
phrases while providing an interesting historical and cultural background. Readers from
all cultures are invited to experience the wealth of Chinese tradition as the alphabet is
used to journey through five thousand years of Chinese history and relate ancient concepts
to the modern western world.
This 32-page book illuminates 23 Chinese terms with both Chinese characters and hanyu-pinyin (Romanized Chinese), followed by an English translation and narrative. Chinese folk art illuminates the text and provides both whimsy and lyricism. Using handmade papers and brocades with mineral paints for the illustrations, the artist has perfected a style based upon China's ancient cave paintings created in the third century. Literature and art are brilliantly combined in this book, just as Chinese and Western thought have melded together in contemporary society.

The author, Brian Johnston , 10/30/97
A witty and sympathetic insight into contemporary China I spent almost three years
working and travelling in China and this is my response to a challenging, fascinating and
insightful experience. I wanted to convey the mystery and wonder of a strange culture, but
at the same time avoid the stereotypes of the "inscrutable" Chinese that dog so
many accounts of the country. I also wanted to look behind the facade of the communist
government, so focused on by the Western media, and see the "real" Chinese, the
ordinary people striving to be individuals and to lead their lives as best they can within
the parameters that restrain them. The book is a mixture of history, social commentary and
a look at contemporary China, to which is added humourous episodes, personal encounters
and the adventurers of being a foreign traveller in a strange land. From having to chase,
kill and eat a snake, to starring in a Chinese television commerical and meeting China's
most famous rock star... What can I say - this is a great read! It's also one of the very
few travel books that take a look at China after the Tiananmen crackdown, in a country of
fast economic and social change. It also gives a unique insight into Chinese minority
cultures and their position in a Han Chinese-dominated society. Please consider!

DEAR ALICE--description of contents
DEAR ALICE, recently nominated for the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize, is a collection of
lively letters from China written by U.S. Americans hired to teach English there. The
adventurous teachers write home to Alice Renouf, the woman who got them their job, trying
to capture the high hilarity and deep insights that come with adapting to a land one
writer calls "on the opposite side of everything you can think of."
See Amanda dragged from quick mud with a thick tropical vine!
Be there as Jeanne survives visits from 175 students in a Chinese hospital!
The artless, first-person style of letters from all over China captures the feel of learning to live in a strange land better than even great scholarship can. No description of "the Chinese" could match Teddy's portrait of a friend, which begins, "An overworked computer science student, she has the vibrancy of a handful of colored ribbons rippling in the wind." Greg's third-month report conveys more about pollution than the most authoritative UN figures: "The sun has broken through today, finally, and hatched that low egg of gray clouds." And no wise advice from travel books about buying train tickets in advance is as memorable as Kristin's story of rip-offs, missed trains, then finally a ticket but "NO SEAT! I stand, squat, lean, cry for 17 HRS! Water is dripping on my head, I'm surrounded by a FLOOD of FILTHY SLUDGE! No place to sit--so crowded--ALMOST DIED. Finally get ot Hangzhou and it is GORGEOUS, and so is the reason I went there--Phillipe!"
It's all here: passion and confusion, despair, and deep love--"a grand drama," as editor Phyllis Thompson calls it, "played out by foreigners all over the Chinese republic."
Readers will laugh, muse, and learn along with these intrepid explorers and, in the end, will understand better why David writes home, "I think this year has done more for me than twelve years in corporate America would do." "Because I have chosen to touch the fire of Chinese life," adds Greg, "I have actually felt a greater range of human emotions. I won't leave China a jaded and cynical man; China will hold me in its grasp, possibly forever."

Gr. 5^-8. Beautifully connected through their common setting and characters, these six
simply written short stories, which take place in a small manufacturing city in southern
Taiwan, are about values: religious, secular, and cultural. Goa Mai wants to win the
abacus--at the expense of her best friend. Kun Pei discovers that the safety of his pigeon
is more important than winning. Da Wei questions funeral rituals, only to realize that he
derives comfort from them. Honesty prevails after Ping Mei struggles with cheating. These
stories provide a look at Chinese life as well as an understanding that young people of
any culture deal with everyday issues. A chapter offering brief explanations of Chinese
customs and a glossary are helpful. Susan DeRonne

If you've ever wondered what it's like to walk in the shoes of a Tibetan monk, you're in for a shocker. Palden Gyatso followed his heart into the monastery at the age of 10 to study under his uncle, also a monk. By his mid-20s, when he should have been preparing for a higher degree, he instead found himself behind the bars of a Chinese communist prison. For the next 30 years, he would endure interrogations, deprivation, starvation, beatings, and psychological torture. When he was finally released in 1992, he fled the country, managing to smuggle out not only the names of his fellow prisoners but Chinese instruments of torture to show the world. With the help of translator Tsering Shakya, Palden Gyatso has crafted his story into a fluid yet surprisingly dispassionate account of his time in prison. Still, it is almost impossible not to be swept along on waves of pity, horror, and compassion as he suffers unspeakably at the hands of his tormentors. To understand the plight of one Tibetan monk is to step behind the eyes of an entire people. --Brian Bruya

Art and Architecture Editor's Recommended Book The authors of this 352-page volume took on
a task comparable to explaining the Renaissance in a dozen pages. They have
nonetheless put together a valuable reference, one that may stand as the ideal first text
for scholars seriously looking into Chinese painting. The section on the 20th century is
perhaps especially useful to scholars, because some books treat 20th-century Chinese art
as an example of what happens when a truly great tradition is corrupted by a lesser one.
One only wishes for more close-ups like the stunning bird's-eye view of Zhao Mengfu's
Elegant Rocks and Sparse Trees, a section of a hand scroll that is reproduced in nearly
full size. James Cahill's deft explication of the calligraphic marks Zhao used, and their
significance to the whole, is particularly easy to follow because of the size of the
image.

From the Publisher
China has one of the world's richest heritage in arts, dance, music, poetry, paintings,
and literature. Tomes have been written about each subject with materials from antiquity
to the present, unimaginable in other culture. This book presents the essence in a
panoramic view of Chinese culture.
Excerpted from Chinese Culture in a Kaleidoscope
China has experience recurrent renaissance ever since the Spring and Autumn Era (722-481
B.C.) Philosophical discourses blossomed together with ancient poems and songs during the
Warring States Epoch (403 -221 B.C.) Absorbing the cream of the Mongolian steppes and the
essence in music from Central Asia, she created musical instruments not seen else where.
With her geographical, linguistic, and social diversity, she produced an abundant number
of talents in drama, music, calligraphy, poetry, novels, essays, and above all, subtle
humor. No single book can do justice to Chinese culture as China, one of the longest,
continuous civilizations, has one of the world's richest heritage in arts, dance, music,
poetry and literature, enjoyed by scholars, students, and all readers. With recurring
renaissances, Chinese culture as a whole has undergone many metamorphoses -- from single
to elegant but never complex, from folkish to scholarly but never stagnating, from
regional to national but not deteriorating. Songs and sonnets together with music
fashioned folk culture in antiquity, poetry glorified the T'ang and Sung times (618-1279).
Drama flowered during the Yuan (1260-1368). Many art forms flourished continuously such as
calligraphy, short stories and essays, and novel; each is exemplified with the China could
offer. This book, thus, presents the cultural wealth of China in a capsule form, like Dim
Sam, to be appreciated by all.
